Colored By Their Lunch- Pink Animals Animals

The plant and animal kingdoms abound with bright colors, from the lush green of photosynthesizing plants to the bold black and orange stripes of tigers. Color plays a multitude of roles in the natural world, used to entice, to camouflage, or to warn other creatures. Colors signal harvest time, breeding conditions, and the change of seasons, from the first greens of spring to the brilliant reds and browns of the fall.  Plants, however, can produce a range of pigments, so many animals are colored by what they eat. Flamingos range in color from light pink, from eating crustaceans such as shrimp and prawns, to bright red, from eating spirulina and other types of algae. The color comes from carotene, the same substance that colors yams and cantaloupe. Pink pigs (and people) display beauty that’s only skin deep but when pink appears as an animal’s prime pigment the results can be strikingly beautiful… they don’t call it “shocking pink” for nothing! This proud posse of puce poseurs provides proof positive pink can be a perfectly pleasing pigment. Some of the most striking cases of pink colored animals are collected below.

7 Very Deadly And Dangerous Animals You Almost Never Heard Of Animals

Cone Snail

Conus is a large genus of small to large predatory sea snails, marine gastropod molluscs, with the common names of cone snails, cone shells or cones. Conus snails are all venomous. Live ones should be handled with care or not handled at all, because they are all capable of stinging humans with unpleasant results. The species that are most dangerous to humans are the larger ones that prey on small bottom-dwelling fish. The other species hunt and eat marine worms or mollusks. Cone snails use a hypodermic-like modified radula tooth and a venom gland to attack and paralyze their prey before engulfing it. The tooth is sometimes likened to a dart or a harpoon. It is barbed and can be extended some distance out from the mouth of the snail, at the end of the proboscis.

Stonefish

Stonefishes are venomous, dangerous, and even fatal to humans. It is the most venomous fish in the world currently known. They are found in the coastal regions of Indo-Pacific oceans. The vernacular name of the species, the stonefish, derives from the stonefish’s ability to camouflage itself with a grey and mottled color similar to the color of a stone. Swimmers may not notice them, and may inadvertently step on them, triggering a sting. When the stonefish is disturbed, it may inject an amount of venom proportional to the amount of pressure applied to it.

Puffer Fish

Pufferfish are generally believed to be the second–most poisonous vertebrates in the world, after the golden poison frog. Certain internal organs, such as liver, and sometimes the skin, are highly toxic to most animals when eaten; nevertheless, the meat of some species is considered a delicacy in Japan, Korea and China when prepared by chefs who know which part is safe to eat and in what quantity. Puffer’s (tetrodotoxin) deadens the tongue and lips, and induces dizziness and vomiting, followed by numbness and prickling over the body, rapid heart rate, decreased blood pressure, and muscle paralysis. The toxin paralyzes diaphragm muscles and stops the person who has ingested it from breathing. People who live longer than 24 hours typically survive, although possibly after a coma lasting several days.

Blue Ringed Octopus

They are currently recognized as one of the world’s most venomous marine animals. Despite their small size and relatively docile nature, they can prove a danger to humans. They can be recognized by their characteristic blue and black rings and yellowish skin. The blue-ringed octopus is 12 to 20 cm (5 to 8 inches), but its venom is powerful enough to kill humans. There is no blue-ringed octopus antivenom available. The octopus produces venom that contains tetrodotoxin, 5-hydroxytryptamine, hyaluronidase, tyramine, histamine, tryptamine, octopamine, taurine, acetylcholine, and dopamine. Tetrodotoxin blocks sodium channels, causing motor paralysis and respiratory arrest within minutes of exposure, leading to cardiac arrest due to a lack of oxygen. The toxin is produced by bacteria in the salivary glands of the octopus.

Mosquito

Although a few species are harmless or even useful to humanity, most are a nuisance because they suck blood from vertebrates, many of them attacking humans. In feeding on blood various species of mosquitoes transmit some of the most harmful human and livestock diseases. Some authorities argue accordingly that mosquitoes are the most dangerous animals on earth.

Poison Dart Frog

These species are diurnal and often have brightly-colored bodies. Although all wild dendrobatids are at least somewhat toxic, levels of toxicity vary considerably from one species to the next and from one population to another. Many species are critically endangered. These amphibians are often called “dart frogs” due to the Amerindians’ indigenous use of their toxic secretions to poison the tips of blowdarts. However, of over 175 species, only three have been documented as being used for this purpose  and none come from the Dendrobates genus, which is characterized by the brilliant color and complex patterns of its members. The most poisonous of these frogs, the golden poison frog (Phyllobates terribilis), has enough toxin on average to kill ten to 20 men or about ten thousand mice.

Box Jellyfish

Box jellyfish are known for the extremely potent venom produced by some species. They are among the most venomous creatures in the world. Stings from these and a few other species in the class are extremely painful and sometimes fatal to humans. Once a tentacle of the box jellyfish adheres to skin, it pumps nematocysts with venom into the skin, causing the sting and agonizing pain.

Bipolar symptoms may begin in teen years

SUMMARY: The number of teenagers who have experienced mania -- a hallmark of bipolar disorder -- is close to the number of adults estimated to have the mood disorder, suggesting that for many the condition begins during adolescence, according to a new study. The study included more than 10,000 teenagers who went through extensive interviews about their moods and behavior.

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - The number of teenagers who have experienced mania -- a hallmark of bipolar disorder -- is close to the number of adults estimated to have the mood disorder, suggesting that for many the condition begins during adolescence, according to a new study.
"The traditional wisdom has been that mania begins in your 20s and 30s," said Kathleen Ries Merikangas, the study's lead author and chief of the genetic epidemiology branch at the National Institute of Mental Health.
"I think the important thing is for people to recognize that mania does occur in adolescents," she said.
Mania is a mood disorder characterized by excessive energy, a lack of sleep and sometimes risky and impulsive behaviors.
The most common diagnostic definition of bipolar disorder includes alternate cycles of mania and depression, though one type of bipolar diagnosis involves mania alone.
Merikangas said there have been smaller studies estimating how common mania is among children, and she and her colleagues sought to get a better handle on national rates of the disorder in kids.
The study included more than 10,000 teenagers who went through extensive interviews about their moods and behavior.
The research team found that 2.5 percent met the criteria for having had mania and depression, and 2.2 percent of teens had experienced it within the last 12 months.
Also within the year preceding the survey, 1.3 percent of the kids had mania alone and 5.7 percent had depression.
"I think that our data suggest that bipolar disorder is more common in adolescents than previous studies had shown," Merikangas told Reuters Health.
She said it could be because the questions used during the interviews were somewhat broader than what earlier surveys had asked. But all children considered to have a mood disorder in her study met the criteria for diagnosis in the DSM-IV, the standard diagnostic manual for psychiatry.
Merikangas and her colleagues point out in their report, published Monday in the Archives of General Psychiatry, that the rates of mood disorders they found among teenagers are close to what is seen in adults.
According to the National Institute of Mental Health, 2.6 percent of adults have had bipolar disorder in the last 12 months.
"This (study) confirms the impression that onset in adolescents is part of the picture for this disorder for many many patients," said Dr. Robert Findling, director of the division of child and adolescent psychiatry at University Hospitals Case Medical Center, in Cleveland, who was not involved in the new study.
The mood disorders also became more common as kids got older.
For instance, 1.4 percent of 13 and 14 year olds met the criteria for mania whereas nearly twice as many 17 and 18 year olds had the disorder.
Dr. Benjamin Goldstein at the Sunnybrook Research Institute in Toronto said this study has made the greatest effort to date in determining how widespread bipolar disorder is among youth.
"I think what stuck out to me most was how severely impaired the adolescents were who were described as having bipolar disorder," said Goldstein, who did not participate in the research.
About one out of every five teens with mania and depression had made a suicide attempt, and more than half had an anxiety or behavior disorder as well.
The study found that only about half of kids with mania and depression had been treated for the disorder.
Goldstein said there are effective treatments for kids with mood disorders.
The study results don't necessarily suggest that the rates of bipolar symptoms in teens are rising.
More likely, Goldstein said, increasing numbers of teens who seek treatment for a psychiatric problem are being diagnosed with bipolar disorder.
"The take home message is that adolescence is when we really see bipolar disorder begin, so we should shift our focus of prevention and intervention earlier in the lifespan," Merikangas said.

Anxiety therapy doesn't work as well in elderly

SUMMARY: Cognitive behavioral therapy was most effective at easing anxiety in older adults, but it did not work as well as it typically does in younger and middle-aged adults, according to a new study.

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) -
A form of talk therapy called cognitive behavioral therapy appears to help older adults battle anxiety disorders slightly better than other approaches, but not as well as in younger adults, according to a new study."Cognitive behavioral therapy is the mainstay for treating anxiety disorders in younger adults. Its lower effect in older adults in this study is concerning," said Dr. Eric Lenze, a professor at Washington University School of Medicine, who was not involved in this study.Anxiety disorders, which include panic disorder, phobias, post-traumatic stress and generalized anxiety disorder, are common in adults over age 55.The authors write in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society that three to 14 out of every 100 older adults has an anxiety disorder.

While earlier studies have shown that cognitive behavioral therapy works well for younger and middle-aged adults, there has not been as much research into the treatment for seniors."The prevailing assumption tends to be that what works with working-age people will work with older people, but this might not actually be the case," said Rebecca Gould, the lead author of the study and a researcher at King's College London.Gould's team gathered up the results from 12 previous studies on people over age 55 with an anxiety disorder.Half of the studies compared cognitive behavioral therapy to other treatments, such as medications or group discussions, while the other half compared the therapy to no treatment.

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) often involves one-on-one meetings with a therapist, with the ultimate goal of solving the defective thinking process that's causing the disorder. On average in the studies, people went through 12 sessions of therapy.Compared to doing nothing, cognitive behavioral therapy had a "moderate" effect on helping people's anxiety.Compared to medications or group discussions, the therapy relieved the disorder slightly better.Gould's team noted that the improvement over other treatments was small."What this might mean clinically is that the client in the CBT condition might be a little less severely or moderately anxious relative to the client in the active control condition," Gould wrote in an email to Reuters Health.

GOING AFTER ROOT CAUSES

Gould says therapy might work better than drugs because it seeks to fix the causes of anxiety rather than the symptoms."If we can address the causes of symptoms of anxiety (e.g. by changing how we think about or interpret things) then we can stop them coming back in the future. If we only address the symptoms of anxiety then we can't," she said.Though Gould's analysis and those of studies in younger adults agree that cognitive behavioral therapy helps treat anxiety, the effect in older adults is small while the effect seen in younger adults is moderate or large, the authors wrote.

Gould said she doesn't know why the therapy seems less effective in older adults, but it's possible that talk therapy might take longer to work for them.Lenze said that cognitive behavioral therapy is still worthwhile in older adults."Until better treatments are developed there are somewhat limited options," he told Reuters Health. He added that anxiety can take a toll on the mental and physical health of adults if it's not treated.

Gould said more studies that compare cognitive behavioral therapy to other treatments are needed in older adults, and her group is planning a study that explores the benefit of "mindfulness-based" cognitive therapy, which includes practices such as meditation.Lenze said he and his colleagues are also exploring this approach, as well as combining cognitive behavioral therapy with medications.

At-home Activities for Sick Kids

There will be days when your child calls in sick and you have to pitch in, to provide comfort and care for your ailing child. However, there will also be times when you will have to engage your little one in some activity to lessen the instances of him/her feeling sick and cranky. That's where we come into the picture to help you with certain home activities.
Children tend to get mighty cranky and clingy, and for most part of the time, get highly irritable when they are smitten by the flu or by any sort of sickness. What they crave for, at such times is, undivided attention from their parents and family members. As a parent, you have to be ready to take on all the duties of caring and fending for the child as well as provide means to keep your child's mind engaged, so that it takes their mind off the sickness. In situations, when the child is affected with chickenpox or scarlet fever and is forced to stay off the school limits for days on end, it is only but natural for the child to get bored and lethargic. With the help of some activities, you can ensure your child is kept busy in something productive than have him/her get cranky all the time. Besides, it will prevent depressing moods from brewing at home level as well.

SICK-DAY ACTIVITIES FOR KIDS
Your child is on the road to recovery and in the meantime, you are fed up looking at him/her sleeping in front of the television the whole day like a zombie. Agreed, that your child needs some much-needed rest, but that doesn't mean making him/her highly inactive during the tenure of sickness. Enlisted here are a few activities that you can engage your child with; it will help keep his/her mind diverted as well as give you some free time.

G
ET A BREATH OF FRESH AIR
Spend Time Outside
Kids love to play outdoors and having to sit at home all day will add up to their crankiness and irritability. Allow them some time daily to soak up some essential vitamin D and breathe in some fresh air; this will help make them feel better as well as speed up their recuperating process.

C
REATE A TREASURE COVE
Comfort
Throw around a few pillows and create a treasure cove for you and your child to rest during the daytime. To make it more interesting for your child, stack the fortress with books, puzzles and movie DVDs. Dress up your child (only if he/she is feeling up to the mark) and treat him/her like a true prince/princess; just playing this game will definitely make your child feel better and will surely take away the sickness blues.

B
RING CHEER
Cheer Up
Do not allow your child to get the sickness blues; instead keep boredom away with some games they will enjoy. Just to see your baby smile, try 'horsing' around. I can guarantee you that your child won't show a hint of boredom with this activity. The mere presence of a smiling face can cheer up your sick child and keep the spirits soaring, by simply being there.

C
OLLECT AND OBSERVE
Hobby Ideas
A good move will be to get your child involved in your hobbies (the one's you enjoyed as a kid!). Take out that old treasure box you have hidden in the attic and get your child to spot the different types of coins/stamps/pens that you have collected over the years. You never know your child may carry forward that legend one fine day. Probably, you could team up this activity with a gist of how you acquired the particular stamp or coin.

B
ECOME A DUMMY
Become a Dummy
Children love toys for the mere reason that the toys allow them to try out stuff with them without complaining. For a change, play a dummy with your kid, and boost your child's creative streak. So what if you end up looking like a clown who has run away from the local circus? At least you'd have brought cheer to your child's face.

P
APER SCISSOR ALERT
Get Crafty
Snip, snip, snip. There you go; give your child some colorful papers and a scissor and let him/her unleash their apparently active minds. Help out with making paper men and lanterns and use it to decorate the house. Ask your child to help out with decorating the living room or any other room with these paper cutouts. It will keep your child engaged in the activity as well as keep their crankiness at bay.

P
REPARE GREETINGS
Prepare Greeting
If your child's not too comfortable with scissors and cutting, then simply hand some crayons and color pencils/pens and ask him/her to prepare greetings. After all, playing with colors makes the mood vibrant, and there is absolutely no harm if the child is sitting quietly and coloring his/her way to glory.

P
LAY WITH TOYS
Playtime
Leave your child alone for a brief period of time and let him/her play with soft toys. One of the observations made by many parents is that, allowing the child to play with toys puts them on a faster road to recovery. Besides, there's an unspoken comfort when it comes to cuddling up with soft toys even when you've surpassed the age limit to play with one.

C
OOKIE IN THE KITCHEN
Cooking Together
How nice to have your sweet little cookie help you out in the kitchen! With your child's help, prepare something he/she likes to eat. This way, the food you prepare won't go for a waste and the two of you will have a nice time together. Allow them to have the upper hand here, as that will ensure they do not get cranky.

ALK DOWN MEMORY LANE
Walk Down Memory Lane
Revisit some of your fondest memories with your child by taking out old albums and scanning pictures. You can even create a mosaic of the best pictures with his/her help and use it to decorate the house. Another activity that you can do with them around is, create a music CD or DVD with your child's selection of songs. This will surely keep his/her spirit soaring for a long time.

NTERTAIN WITH MUPPETS
Entertain
Bored, eh? We will see that you won't be anymore. One fun activity you and your child can try is make dolls out of paper foil, wool and socks. Once you're done, ask your child to narrate a story with these dolls. You will have a nice time making them and then listening to interesting stories of your child.

LAY WITH YOUR KID
Play Together
Daddy dear, make some time for your precious little one and race a toy car please. Play with your child; it could be video games or simple car races, but your child will enjoy this activity the most. You can even build a rail at home; this way, you can deliver goods to your child and he/she can return some back to you. Indulge in some board games if your child is not feeling up to the mark to move around the house.

L
OTS OF PAMPERING
Pamper
How very nice if someone sings, 'You are my sunshine, my very sunshine ...' Take a guess at what will happen; your child will begin feeling better almost instantly. Now for that little smile, you can indulge in excess pampering, can't you? It worked for me though!

T
UCK ME TIGHT
Tuck Me Tight
Remember that your child needs rest; make it compulsory to keep time aside for rest time. During this time, you could tuck your child to bed with a nice little story or song. Cuddle up close with your child and give him/her your undivided love and attention; that's one of the best activities your child will love doing.
